The Indian Premier League auction is returning to Indian soil, marking the first time in three years that the marquee event will be hosted domestically after being staged overseas.

While the auction remains a significant event where franchise strategies, player releases, and bidding wars often capture headlines, the 2027 edition will be a mini-auction. Consequently, the scope of squad rebuilding will be significantly smaller compared to the mega auction held ahead of IPL 2025.
The previous three auctions were held abroad, with Dubai hosting the 2024 event, Jeddah staging the 2025 mega auction, and Abu Dhabi conducting the 2026 mini-auction. The decision to relocate the event back to India stems from franchises voicing logistical concerns about transporting large delegations overseas for a relatively smaller auction.
IPL 2027 Auction Venue Revealed
The suspense surrounding the destination has ended. According to a report from Cricbuzz, Goa has been selected as the host for the IPL 2027 auction, a confirmation made by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on September 23. This marks the auction’s return to India for the first time since the 2023 season auction was held in Kochi in December 2022.
When will IPL 2027 auction take place?
The auction is slated for mid-December 2026. Although the BCCI has not officially released the exact date, Saikia suggested it could fall between December 14 and 16. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal later indicated that December 15-16 are the probable dates. Given that this is a mini-auction, the entire event is anticipated to be completed within a single day.
Why Goa?
The choice of venue involves more than just selecting a popular destination. The BCCI required a location capable of accommodating the substantial delegations accompanying the 10 IPL franchises.
Per Cricbuzz, the board mandated a five-star hotel with over 100 rooms for franchise representatives and other stakeholders. The December timeframe coincides with India’s peak wedding and events season, making suitable accommodation a critical logistical factor.
