US President Donald Trump voiced concerns regarding the depreciation of the yen during his summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, according to Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama on Friday. She provided an unusually detailed account of the leaders’ discussions on currencies.
“During the recent Japan-US summit, President Trump expressed concern about the yen’s weakness,” Katayama stated at a routine press conference. She added that she was disclosing this exchange of views for the first time after consulting with the Prime Minister’s Office.
Katayama’s candid disclosure of the leaders’ talks—typically kept confidential by governments—indicates shared apprehension in both Tokyo and Washington regarding the yen’s ongoing decline, despite their joint intervention in July.
