Alpenglow modifies validator consensus by allowing nodes to exchange votes directly rather than embedding them as transactions within blocks—the batches added to the chain. This approach can finalize agreement within one or two voting rounds.
Because validator votes will no longer be recorded as transactions, some Solana activity metrics may decline. Totals that previously included these votes will shrink even if user payments and trades remain unchanged. The Foundation has advised data providers to revise their comparisons accordingly.
Services that construct transaction histories must keep competing candidate blocks isolated until the network selects a final block, as combining their contents could create an inaccurate record.
Applications that merely submit transactions and query account balances will not require migration, per the Foundation’s guidance.
The 150-millisecond figure remains a simulation-based target rather than a proven live-market result. Additional latency from wallet processing and exchange deposit checks may extend end-to-end settlement times.
No official launch date has been set for the mainnet. Anza’s roadmap tentatively permits feature activations to resume Sept. 28, but that date is not confirmed as the Alpenglow rollout.
