‘Big Boys’ Creator Jack Rooke Sparks Excitement with Upcoming Spice Girls Comedy Biopic

Jack Rooke, the creator behind the acclaimed series Big Boys, has revealed that he is currently developing a lively comedy-drama biopic centered on the iconic Spice Girls, with an initial script already in the works.

The BAFTA-winning writer shared exciting details about this potential project during his appearance on the BBC Sounds podcast Sidetracked With Annie And Nick, where he stepped in as a guest host alongside Annie Macmanus.

When questioned about the prospect of bringing the Spice Girls’ legendary journey to the screen, Rooke confirmed he has been actively working on a script that aims to transcend the traditional music biopic formula.

He characterized the prospective film as a vibrant, “fun comedy drama,” revealing that the script was penned by himself and a “lovely little group of gals and gays.”

While Rooke emphasized that the project has not yet been greenlit for production, he noted that active discussions are underway. He expressed his hope that the Spice Girls themselves will ultimately approve of the creative direction they have crafted.

Rooke shared that the group represented the first time he recalled seeing working-class women openly pursuing massive ambitions within British pop culture, while also acknowledging the long-standing critical discourse surrounding the massive commercial machine that enveloped the band.

Rooke drew a direct comparison to Sam Mendes’ highly anticipated upcoming four-film Beatles project.

“If we’re going to have four dedicated films about The Beatles,” he remarked, “then I genuinely believe we need a big, joyous comedy romp about the Spice Girls.”

He jokingly admitted that he might have already revealed too much, before humbly describing a potential Spice Girls film as his ultimate “dream and desire.”

Rooke is best known for creating and writing Channel 4’s critically acclaimed, semi-autobiographical comedy Big Boys, which starred Dylan Llewellyn and Jon Pointing.

Having recently concluded its third season in 2025, Rooke previously told NME that his goal with the series was to portray youth and male friendship in a manner that actively resisted familiar television “tribes and tropes.”

Of course, a screen project dedicated to the Spice Girls would mark the group’s first major biographical feature, though it is hardly their first trip to the big screen. All five members famously starred in the delightfully absurd 1997 musical comedy Spice World, which boasted iconic cameos from the likes of Elton John, Bob Geldof, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and Meat Loaf.

Over the years, intermittent rumors have surfaced regarding another Spice Girls cinematic venture, including 2021 claims that a sequel to Spice World was under consideration, though those plans ultimately failed to materialize.

Melanie C has previously voiced strong support for a biographical film about the band. When asked by NME in 2020 about the prospect of a proper Spice Girls biopic, she enthusiastically replied, “I think it would be brilliant, and there’s a real appetite for it. The story of the Spice Girls would be perfect for something like that.”

Rooke’s exciting comments come as the music world celebrates the 30th anniversary of the group’s debut single, ‘Wannabe,’ which was released in July 1996 and propelled Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, and Geri Halliwell into global superstardom.

Despite ongoing speculation surrounding a milestone reunion, no full tour has been confirmed for the anniversary. Mel C stated in March that while the group “want to do something” together, she ruled out a 2026 tour, with Mel B subsequently adding that a reunion trek was “not happening.”

Nevertheless, four of the members—Beckham, Chisholm, Bunton, and Halliwell—were recently seen harmonizing on ‘Viva Forever’ earlier this year, while Mel B and Mel C later shared a lively stage reunion for ‘Spice Up Your Life’ in Leeds.
