Liverpool are continuing to monitor former academy midfielder Tyler Morton as Andoni Iraola looks to add another defensive‑mindful option to his squad.
Liverpool Monitoring Tyler Morton at Lyon
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are “keeping tabs” on Morton’s progress and view him as one of several possibilities for the number‑six role.
No concrete move has been finalized yet, while Lyon remains reluctant to lose an important midfielder halfway through the season.
Morton recorded 43 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing two goals and three assists. He has also made a solid impact this term, starting four of Lyon’s first five Ligue 1 matches and featuring in European competition.
Liverpool sold Morton to Lyon in August 2025 for about €15 million after his debut for his youth club. Although the Reds did not include a buy‑back clause, a 20 % sell‑on clause was secured, guaranteeing a share of future transfer fees if he moves elsewhere.
Morton’s contract with Lyon runs until 2030, giving the club considerable leeway in potential subsequent deals.
There is logic in Liverpool revisiting Morton. He knows the Reds intimately, is homegrown talent, and has matured considerably since leaving England. Regular Ligue 1 football has turned him into a more developed defensive midfielder.
The primary obstacle, however, is financial. Selling him at that price point avoided urgent time pressure, but Lyon now holds a lengthy commitment and little incentive to negotiate in January. Without a buy‑back safety net, Liverpool would face market rates if considering a return.
This pathway makes sense only if Iraola judges Morton ready for immediate integration. Otherwise, waiting until summer may be wiser, preventing a mid‑season premium for a player acquired just eighteen months earlier.

Reds would have to pay a premium to sign the midfielder
There is something logical about Liverpool revisiting Morton. He already understands the club, counts as homegrown and has developed considerably since leaving England. Most importantly, regular football in Ligue 1 has allowed him to become a more mature defensive midfielder rather than simply an academy prospect.
The difficulty lies in finance. The Reds sold him relatively cheaply because he required competitive minutes, yet Lyon now hold a long-term contract and have no urgency to bargain in January. Absence of a buy‑back clause means Liverpool must compete on standard market terms.
That does not render the opportunity mistaken. Morton’s departure facilitated his growth, and the 20 % sell‑on provision still offers the Reds some protection should his value continue to rise.
A January return makes sense solely if Iraola is convinced Morton is prepared to take over immediately. If not, a summer window would likely prove smarter, avoiding a mid‑season upgrade fee for a player purchased merely eighteen months prior.
