WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns recently spoke candidly about the persistent body image pressures he faces in professional wrestling.
In an interview with Men’s Health ahead of the live-action Street Fighter film’s release — in which Reigns portrays Akuma — the champion discussed the mental and physical toll of maintaining an elite physique year-round.
“Thank you. And sometimes that’s like, we all got a little bit of body dysmorphia, right? We’re all fighting this little critic in our head. So luckily I have a lot of time in, so I will always carry some muscle mass, but I’m in an aesthetic business and this is what I signed up for. So there’s nobody to blame. This is the troublemaker here. But yeah, it’s not always perfect,” the WWE Heavyweight Champion said.
“The demands that we’re asked, it is hard to stay unless that’s just the way you are. That’s your genetics, and you’re one of those brothers that are just ripped year-round, and there are guys like that. Hard gainers, where they just kind of always stay shredded,” he added.
Reynes acknowledged that he does not fall into either genetic category, noting that his body tends to soften quickly even with minor dietary indulgences.
“But no, I think there’s ebbs and flows, and I think it goes back to how do you feel? Are you injured? Are you beat up? And then is that affecting you mentally? What’s going on personally? Do you have family? Do you have a wife? How many kids do you have? What’s going on personally there?
“So we’re humans just like everybody else. We have our day-to-day. We’re paying our bills. We’re taking our kids to school. We’re doing all the normal stuff. So I think that can get the better of a performer too. And it can kind of dictate how they’re looking depending on the year. But when we get to this season, you got to be in it. It doesn’t matter,” Reigns concluded.
The live-action Street Fighter film is scheduled for release on October 16, 2026, and also features WWE’s Cody Rhodes and NJPW’s Hirooki Goto.
