In 1984, Anna Domino released the five-track mini-album East And West on Les Disques du Crépuscule, the Belgian indie label associated with Tony Wilson’s Factory Records. Based in downtown New York at the time, the Tokyo-born artist conveyed the neighborhood’s atmosphere through lush avant-pop soundscapes. A new reissue of East And West, released under Domino’s own imprint, revisits that era.
East And West established Domino as an underground touchstone, with artists including Clairo, James K, HTRK, Carla Del Forno, Astrid Sonne, Horsegirl, and Smerz citing her influence. The reissue pairs the original tracks with key singles from the period and seven previously unreleased demos, newly digitized from Domino’s original four-track recordings. Today brings the release of “Happy To Go,” accompanied by a video of rare archival photographs from late-1970s and early-1980s New York City, personally shot by Domino. Watch below.
