Baku, Azerbaijan, hosted the opening day of the 2026 World Judo Championships, where new world champions emerged to secure their coveted red back patches in the capital of the land of fire.
In the -48kg category, Italy’s Assunta SCUTTO advanced to her third consecutive World final following an impressive morning of competition. The question remained whether the defending champion could successfully retain her title. Opposing her was Japan’s KOGA Wakana, who displayed exceptional form and high-quality judo throughout the day. Having previously earned World bronze and silver, Koga sought to complete her collection with the gold. Her confidence grew steadily with each match, propelling her into the final with significant momentum.
The final was a hard-fought battle, with both judoka defending resolutely and neither conceding much ground. Eventually, Koga exploited a critical opportunity on the mat, displaying composure under pressure to convert it decisively and end the contest emphatically. It was KOGA who departed as the World Champion, marking a breakthrough moment for the Japanese star.
The medals were presented by Mr. Azer ALIYEV, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee.
In the -60kg division, Ahmad YUSIFOV reached his first World final on home soil. For the local favourite, securing a place in the final of the World Championships in his own nation was an impressive achievement as he aimed to claim his red back patch. With the Baku crowd firmly behind him, the stage was set for a significant home final.
His opponent was Kazakhstan’s Sherzod DAVLATOV, who was also competing in his maiden World final. The Kazakh judoka had appeared composed and dangerous throughout the tournament, and the stage was set for a historic opportunity.
YUSIFOV rose to the occasion in front of the passionate home crowd to secure the victory. With the pressure at its peak, he recovered from behind on the scoreboard, sparking massive celebrations and creating what will undoubtedly be one of the standout moments of this World Championships.
The medals were presented by International Judo Federation Executive Committee Member Mr. Timur KEMELL.
A thrilling first day here in Baku. The championships continue tomorrow in the land of fire.
