Southampton Football Club established its home at The Dell in 1898, merely 15 years after the club’s formation. However, the venue’s future was reshaped by the Taylor Report, which enforced all-seater regulations for top-flight stadiums. This led to a drastic capacity reduction to 15,200, the lowest in the Premier League, prompting the club to plan for a modern replacement.
The transition to St Mary’s Stadium was officially announced in the summer of 1999, with construction work beginning later that year. The 2000/01 season marked Southampton’s final campaign at The Dell, capped by a memorable farewell match. Facing Arsenal, the team overcame a 1-0 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory, with club legend Matt Le Tissier delivering the winning goal.
At the commencement of the 2001/02 season, Southampton relocated to their new St Mary’s home, and The Dell was subsequently demolished. The former site has since been redeveloped into a residential estate, where a garden now outlines the original centre circle, serving as a subtle tribute to the ground’s historic footprint.
