Hundreds of Cornell University students gathered on Monday to voice solidarity with a classmate whose gang-rape allegations have sparked widespread public outrage, demanding that the Ivy League institution take more decisive action to address sexual violence on campus.
Demonstrators called for an independent, external inquiry into the university’s handling of the situation. The alleged victim, who is identified by the pseudonym Jane Doe, claims that Cornell’s administration failed to properly investigate and hold accountable the fraternity members involved.
Protesters also demanded the resignation of Cornell University President Michael Kotlikoff and other senior administrators, accusing them of perpetuating a “culture of rape” through institutional policies.
In a lawsuit filed last month, Jane Doe alleged that she was given drugs and alcohol before being sexually assaulted by multiple members of the campus chapter of the Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024, after she became incapacitated.
At the time of the incident, Doe was 20 years old. Her lawsuit names seven Chi Phi fraternity members, the fraternity chapter itself, a local bar, her sorority, and the university as defendants.
