When Marco Silva was appointed Fulham boss in 2021, he instilled stability that kept the club competitive in the Premier League without serious relegation threats. Silva departed in the summer to assume the head coaching role at Benfica, leaving Fulham to take a calculated risk by appointing former Liverpool and Real Madrid player José María Gutiérrez Arbeloa as his replacement.
The incoming manager stepped into the role despite limited senior management experience, having previously overseen Real Madrid briefly from January to May this year. A glaring issue under Arbeloa has been Fulham’s tendency to concede late goals, with the team allowing scores in the final 15 minutes across four of their six Premier League matches.
Nonetheless, Arbeloa remained resolute following the Ipswich loss, asserting his capability to lead the club and manage the mounting expectations. “I’ve played for the best team in the world, and I’ve coached the best team in the world,” he declared. “Pressure is something I’ve lived with since childhood. It’s part of football—whether for players, coaches, or anyone involved with the club. This pressure is what energizes me.”
