Garden Company, one of Hong Kong’s longest-serving producers of bread and biscuits, has issued an apology and pledged to scrutinise its crowd-management protocols following a world-record attempt involving over 700 students making sandwiches that descended into disorder.
The incident unfolded on Sunday at SKH Tang Shiu Kin Secondary School in Wan Chai, where the firm sought to set a benchmark for the largest sandwich-making lesson in honour of its approaching centenary.
Although more than 700 primary school students took part, witnesses estimated the total attendance, including accompanying parents, reached at least 1,400, leading to severe overcrowding within the venue.
Attendees subsequently shared accounts on social media alleging that patrons forcing their way through the doors nearly precipitated a stampede, while drawing sharp criticism against the organiser for deficient crowd control.
