Kelly Clarkson’s public dispute with a Brooklyn boutique has intensified, centered around an animated bird named Molly. The conflict began when Clarkson visited Art Of Play earlier this month and expressed interest in purchasing the store’s signature animatronic bird. According to the store, Clarkson’s team later took to social media claiming the shop refused to sell Molly to her, prompting a wave of backlash from her fanbase.
In an exclusive interview, Art Of Play co-owner Adam Rubin clarified that the store offered several alternatives during Clarkson’s brief visit, which lasted under five minutes. “This is an unfortunate misunderstanding,” Rubin explained. “We treated her like any other customer, but the situation escalated when she used her platform to criticize us publicly.”
Rubin emphasized that Molly, crafted by a reclusive artisan who lives off-grid, cannot simply be sold due to contractual agreements with the creator. “There are only two of these machines in existence worldwide. We had listed a price of $15 million due to popular demand, though that was largely symbolic given the bird’s artistic value.”
The controversy has led to significant harassment directed towards Art Of Play staff and supporters. Rubin reported receiving threats, review-bombing attempts, and accusations of racial profiling. Local residents were also targeted after intervening during protests outside the store.
Clarkson has not publicly commented further on the matter beyond her initial social media posts. Her representatives did not respond to requests for additional information.
