A Republican congressman is asking the Pentagon to blacklist 58 Chinese universities and 62 technology laboratories, labeling them as national security threats, a move that Beijing has denounced as Cold War-style overreach. Critics fear such actions could jeopardize collaborative scientific efforts between the United States and China and ultimately weaken American innovation.
In a letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, House Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar called for the addition of these prominent Chinese institutions—some of which have ties to major American companies like Nvidia, Apple, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)—to the Section 1286 list.
“The Select Committee has identified PRC [People’s Republic of China] research institutions with documented affiliations, formal agreements, oversight relationships, or other significant ties to China’s defence research and industrial base,” the committee stated in an accompanying October 14 press release.
Although the letter was dated October 1, it was only made public recently.
