Academy Award-winning composer Kris Bowers has been selected to compose the original score for Disney’s upcoming animated feature “Hexed.”
The film features performances by Hailee Steinfeld, Rashida Jones, Jodie Foster, and Walton Goggins in a fantasy coming-of-age story. “Hexed” follows an unconventional teenage protagonist who discovers latent magical abilities, launching her into an immersive adventure through a hidden realm of witches.
“Hexed” is scheduled for theatrical release on November 25.
Bowers described the creative process: “Composing for ‘Hexed’ centered on exploration and experimentation. Inspired by a young woman’s dual dreams of flight—both literal and metaphorical—I investigated unconventional sonic textures. My approach involved integrating instruments constructed from air: bird call whistles, wind wands, nose flutes, bottles, kazoos, air sirens, and transformed recordings of actual birds. The score merges orchestral elements, an electronically altered chamber woodwind ensemble, synths, and natural soundscapes, often blurring acoustical and electronic boundaries. At its heart, this is an intimate mother-daughter journey, and I aimed to balance that emotional core with the film’s sense of wonder and adventure. I’m deeply appreciative of the collaborative energy with Fawn, Jason, Jared, and the entire Disney Animation team.”
Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand direct the project, with Roy Conli and Yvett Merino serving as producers.
In addition to “Hexed,” Bowers composed the score for Netflix’s animated film “Steps” and will also contribute to the upcoming Paramount/Skydance sports drama “Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story,” premiering December 25.
Bowers will collaborate again with filmmaker Ben Proudfoot, having previously scored Breakwater Studios’ documentary “The Eyes Of Ghana.”
