James Maddison expressed confidence in his future contributions to Tottenham after scoring a stunning long-range effort that secured the Premier League victory and gave his team their first win this season.
Influential throughout the match, the playmaker grabbed the opening goal with a powerful curling strike from distance, setting the hosts on their path to a crucial three-nil victory over Coventry that lifted them off the bottom of the table.
Having two years remaining on his contract, Maddison recently returned from a long-term ACL injury but faced a series of setbacks that have kept him out of regular play, delaying his full comeback until this evening.
“I have so much more to give for this club,” Maddison told Sky Sports. “I am 29 and still have plenty of years left to contribute. I possess the self-belief and qualities needed to help us compete in this league.”
Despite spending a staggering amount of transfer fees on new arrivals last summer, Tottenham have struggled to make an impact. Maddison aimed to demonstrate that he was the vital piece missing from the puzzle when given his chance.
When asked if he believed he could replicate this level of performance, Maddison added: “I hoped so. I spoke with the manager [Roberro De Zerbi] about this week and felt it was the right moment to return to the starting lineup after a problematic start to the season. I simply wanted to perform well and showcase my qualities, which is exactly what the team has been lacking in the past eighteen months since my injury.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher backed Maddison’s potential impact on the team, suggesting he could serve as the crucial glue holding the squad together. “He is viewed as the type of player who does that,” Carragher explained. “Naturally, he is always laughing and joking, trying to lift everyone around the dressing room. I believe he will have a major impact. He has captained the club in the past.”
“Even though they have brought in a wealth of attacking talent, he will still think no one is better than him because he possesses such distinct character,” Carragher noted. “He carries the football arrogance that I genuinely admire in players.” He also pointed out that with Kulusevski returning, it will be interesting to see how Maddison fits into the attacking positions.
Regarding the goal itself, Carragher commented: “It was a joy to witness. He is one of the true characters in the game and you genuinely want him around Premier League football. That was a magnificent moment. After surviving a setback like an injury, the fear is whether you can ever come back or remain the same player. There is still a considerable journey ahead, yet he undeniably retains some magic in his boots!”
Maddison’s last competitive start before this victory came in May 2025 during Postecoglou’s tenure, a period in which the club suffered badly and narrowly missed out on relegation last season. Speaking about scoring the goal, he said: “These are the moments you dream of. Those dark days recovering from an ACL injury — dreaming of moments like these and scoring these types of goals makes them all worthwhile.”
Maddison was not the only bright spot for the club on Monday night. Dejan Kulusevki returned from an injury layoff of 526 days, making an emotional entrance for the first time in nearly a year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
“I felt incredibly emotional and proud of Dejan today, as I knew exactly the feeling he experienced stepping back onto the pitch after that long absence,” Maddison shared. “Those moments and those goals make everything worthwhile.”
Can Maddison become the team’s essential glue?
Sky Sports’ Patrick Rowe provided his assessment of the match. “James Maddison was the undis STAR of the show and a major reason Tottenham secured the much-needed win. His goal speaks for itself. However, his overall play also stood out, albeit in a slightly more understated fashion. He dropped deep, found pockets of space, and threaded passes for Solanke’s runs, while also threatening from the half spaces with his crossing ability.” Tottenham had looked disjointed and lacked inspiration across their opening six games. “Maddison appears to be the piece that could link together this entire £300 million spending exercise. Whether that comes through his own finishing or through the ability to bring other players into the game,” Rowe argued. “Keeping him fit and firing is now essential for the club to build on this result.”

Spurs spent £334m on new signings in the summer after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League but they have struggled to have the desired impact. Maddison wanted to show that he was the missing piece of the puzzle when given his chance.
Asked if he thought he could make this type of impact, Maddison added: “I hoped. I spoke to the gaffer [Roberto De Zerbi] about this week and feeling like it was the right moment for me to go back into the starting XI after a stop-start start to the season.
“I just wanted to play well and to show my qualities and what the team has missed in the last 18 months since my last start. The gaffer asked me to play and wanted to enjoy watching me from the side, so hopefully I did that. A goal like that is always nice.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher backed Maddison to have a big impact on Spurs’ season when asked if he can be the glue that links the team together.
“I think he is seen as that type of player,” said Carragher. “He’s naturally one of those people in the game who is always laughing and joking, trying to lift people around the dressing room. I think he will have a big impact. He’s captained the club in the past.
Jamie Carragher grilled James Maddison after the Tottenham forward suggested Roy Keane was his favourite pundit!
“Even though they’ve brought in a lot of attacking talent, he will still think no one’s better than him because he’s that type of character. He has that football arrogance that I like in players.
“It will be interesting to see where he fits in eventually because there are a lot of players at Tottenham in the attacking positions, especially with Kulusevski back.”
Maddison found the top corner with a precise, curling effort that was teed up by Mohammed Kudus after just 14 minutes to give Spurs the start they needed after a dreadful start to the season on a tense night in north London.
“It was a joy to see [his goal],” said Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football. “He is one of the real characters in the game and you want him around Premier League football.
“That was just a great moment. When you’re a player with an injury like that, there will be a fear: will you ever come back or will you be the same player? There is still a long way to go, but he still has a bit of magic in his boots!”
Maddison’s last competitive start before the win over Coventry came in May 2025 when Angel Postecoglou was still in charge of Spurs, who have suffered desperately in the midfielder’s absence, narrowly missing out on relegation last season.
Speaking about his goal, Maddison said: “They are the ones you dream of. Those dark days recovering from the ACL you dream of those moments and those goals. That is always the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Maddison was not the only feel-good story for Spurs on Monday night. Dejan Kulusevski came off the bench to feature in a competitive game for the first time after 526 days out injured in what was an emotional return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Dejan Kulusevski also made an emotional return to the pitch for Spurs late on
“I felt really emotional and proud of Dejan Kulusevski today because I knew exactly that feeling he had stepping back onto the pitch after that amount of time out,” said Maddison. “Those moments and those goals they make it all worth it.”
Can Maddison be the glue for Spurs?
Sky Sports’ Patrick Rowe:
“James Maddison was the star of the show and a big reason Spurs were able to secure the much-needed win. His goal speaks for itself.
“But the rest of his play also stood out, in a slightly more understated manner.
“He was dropping deep, finding pockets of space, threading passes for the runs of Dominic Solanke and threatening from the half spaces with his crossing ability.
“Spurs, after all their investment in the summer, looked disjointed and uninspiring across the opening six games.
“Maddison looks like the piece that could link the £300m pieces of this Spurs puzzle together. Whether that is through his own finishing or the ability to bring other players into the game.
“Keeping him fit and firing is now essential to the club building on this game.”
