India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand is set to begin on October 22, spanning six weeks and comprising a demanding 12‑match schedule—five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests that also form part of the World Test Championship. With the 2027 ODI World Cup slated for South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the series will be a critical platform for the Indian team management to evaluate workload strategies for its key players.
Ravi Shastri Explains Why Jasprit Bumrah Should Not Play All Three Formats
Jasprit Bumrah remains one of India’s most valuable bowlers across all formats, renowned for his ability to deliver under pressure, coupled with pace, accuracy and sharp variations. However, the physical rigours of international cricket make workload management especially crucial for a fast bowler with a history of injury concerns.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has stressed that Bumrah should not be expected to feature regularly in Tests, ODIs and T20Is before the 2027 World Cup. He advocates a selective approach that prioritises Test cricket while allowing sporadic appearances in the white‑ball formats.
“I don’t think he should play all three formats until the World Cup. He should focus primarily on Test cricket and feature sporadically in ODIs and T20Is. I’d rather preserve him for the two Tests in New Zealand, where he’ll be crucial,” Shastri said, as quoted by The Times of India.
Shastri’s stance underscores the importance of long‑term fitness for elite fast bowlers, who face considerable physical demands—particularly when toggling between formats with varying workloads and schedules. By concentrating on Test duties and limiting white‑ball engagements, India can better manage these demands and keep Bumrah available for its most decisive matches ahead of the tournament.
Shastri Highlights Importance of New Zealand Tour for 2027 World Cup Prep
Shastri also views the New Zealand tour as a valuable diagnostic tool for India’s overall preparedness heading into the 2027 ODI World Cup. The extended schedule offers ample opportunities to assess players across formats, evaluate potential combinations and pinpoint areas requiring improvement before the next major international tournament.
He notes that the conditions in New Zealand could provide a useful rehearsal for the challenges India may encounter in South Africa during the World Cup. Both venues tend to favour seam bowling and disciplined batting, demanding adaptability from the squad.
“The entire tour is important. It will give a clear indication of where Indian cricket is heading. Conditions there could also mirror some of what India might face in South Africa during the World Cup,” Shastri added.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup fast approaching, managing senior players and constructing a balanced squad will be paramount. Shastri’s guidance on Bumrah reflects the broader need to strike a balance that safeguards key talent while ensuring the team remains competitive in the preparations leading up to the tournament.
