Detroit tight end Sam LaPorta is focused on the remainder of the season, but he remains open to testing the free-agent market if contract negotiations with the Lions do not produce a satisfactory offer.
During an appearance on “Pardon My Take,” LaPorta said he was disappointed by the course of the ongoing discussions and felt that his contributions to the team were not being fully appreciated.
“It’s disappointing that you go out there every week and bear the risk of getting hurt. Like last year, I broke my f—ng back for the team. And then I’m going out there this year, and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love,” LaPorta said.
He was referring to the fully herniated disc he suffered in Week 10 of last season. LaPorta underwent microdiscectomy surgery and missed the Lions’ final eight games.
Selected from Iowa in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, LaPorta quickly became a key member of Detroit’s offense and a reliable target for quarterback Jared Goff. He also set the NFL record for receptions by a rookie tight end during his first season.
Across his first three seasons, LaPorta recorded 213 receptions for 2,420 yards and 23 touchdowns, averaging 11.4 yards per catch. Fully healthy, he is on pace to record the first 1,000-yard receiving season of his career.
LaPorta remains focused on Detroit for the next three months, but he is making no promises about his long-term plans.
Although he wants to remain with the Lions, LaPorta is aware of the business side of professional football. If Detroit cannot meet his expectations, he is prepared to pursue a market-value contract in free agency.
“I’m going to continue to do my thing and ball out, and in three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good,” LaPorta said. “I’ll go get paid somewhere else. So whatever.”
