Mississippi has released video footage depicting the fatal shooting of a one-year-old child by a police officer, who has since been cleared of criminal liability by state authorities.
The incident occurred in June when Officer Sergeant Hunter Foster discharged his weapon into a moving vehicle during a response to a reported shoplifting incident. The child’s family asserts that the video evidence does not support the justification for the use of force.
According to a month-long investigation by the Mississippi Attorney General’s office, the use of force employed by Foster was deemed appropriate. His attorney, Martin Zummach, has stated that Foster “had no choice” but to fire at the vehicle, as it was heading toward him.
Ben Crump, a civil rights lawyer representing the child’s family, contends that Foster was not in immediate danger when he fired the shot that resulted in the child’s death. Crump further notes that the footage shows the fatal shot was fired from the passenger side of the vehicle.
