DUBAI: Ahead of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced plans to reintroduce V8 engines to the championship, citing his dual experience as a driver and deep connection to fan enthusiasm as the driving force. In consultation with Formula One Management, team representatives, and power unit manufacturers, the FIA is advancing initiatives to implement the change, which Ben Sulayem believes will redefine the sport’s appeal.
“This shift will resonate with drivers and fans alike, signaling a revitalized era for Formula 1,” Ben Sulayem stated during his visit to the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas. His background in rallying provided critical insights into the needs of competitors and organizers, reinforcing his belief that lighter, more agile machinery forms the core of elite motorsport.
The initiative targets a 2030s rollout, featuring a projected 80 kg reduction in vehicle weight and a 50% cut in research, development, and engine costs. By prioritizing responsiveness and driver control, Ben Sulayem emphasized that the V8’s return will enhance both performance and sensory engagement. “The engine’s sound is foundational to Formula 1’s identity. Restoring it will reconnect longtime supporters while captivating new audiences,” he added.
The move underscores strengthened collaboration between the FIA and Formula One Management, formalized through the 2022 Concorde Governance Agreement—a framework spanning the sport’s operations through 2030. This partnership aligns with Ben Sulayem’s broader agenda, which includes securing agreements for Formula E’s promotion, a landmark deal for the World Rally Championship, and a decade-long partnership with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest for the World Endurance Championship.
