On Wednesday, a report surfaced that the league fined Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, Jets coach Aaron Glenn, and Eagles coach Nick Sirianni $250,000 each for their interactions with officials. The details of the behavior that led to the penalties—and the conditions for lifting them, which are reportedly being held in abeyance—remain undisclosed.
Two of the coaches addressed reporters on Thursday, but offered little new insight. Sirianni declined to discuss the specifics of the fine, stating, “I won’t get into my conversations with the league.” He emphasized that his discussions are “player related, as far as my conversations with players, in‑house. Same with conversations with the league, same with conversations with the referees association.” When asked whether his approach to officials has evolved during his tenure, Sirianni spoke about continual personal and professional growth, crediting his faith, family, and support network.
Vrabel, asked about a recent game call following a 30‑24 loss to the Bears, replied, “I’m not in very good favor with the officiating department, so I probably shouldn’t say anything,” and then walked away, leaving no further opportunity for clarification.
The lack of concrete information fuels speculation that the fines may serve as a broad warning to all coaches to treat officials with greater deference. Sirianni’s reference to the NFL Referees Association reinforces this view, suggesting the penalties are part of a larger effort to elevate discourse.
Both Vrabel and Glenn are scheduled to speak with reporters again—Vrabel on Monday and Glenn after Sunday’s game against the Dolphins—potentially offering more details about the infractions and the criteria for the fines to be rescinded. Until then, the prevailing message to coaching staffs remains clear: proceed cautiously with officials.
