In 2026, a film emerged out of nowhere and instantly captured the cultural zeitgeist: “Buddy.”

During IndieWire’s 2026 Future of Filmmaking Summit in Los Angeles, “Buddy” producer Tracy Rosenblum, co‑writer Jamie King, and Roadside Attractions’ head of digital marketing Melissa Yerou discussed the extensive behind‑the‑scenes work that turned the movie into an overnight hit.
The project was conceived to bring Casper Kelly’s distinctive comedic style to the big screen. King was brought on as co‑writer to adapt Kelly’s wild sensibilities for a feature format, and he used his experience writing Disney films to provide the emotional core needed to broaden the film’s appeal.
King said he was drawn to the project because he knew Kelly’s work was inherently funny and that the visual team at BoulderLight could deliver genuine scares. He added that his own role was to supply the “heart” that would balance humor and horror, noting that Kelly insisted Buddy be more than a typical mascot villain. The character was intended to be three‑dimensional, embodying both light and darkness, and ultimately a figure who started as a good person but strayed onto a dangerous path.
Rosenblum chuckled at the description, emphasizing that the unicorn’s complexity and shame make him a compelling anti‑hero. “He’s not simply a villain; his depth is what sets him apart,” she observed.
Because Buddy was so thoroughly developed, Yerou’s team could launch a targeted social‑media campaign almost immediately. They had the character interact with beloved ’90s brands online, and the distinctive voice crafted by King and Kelly quickly resonated with audiences.
Yerou explained that they modeled the campaign on interactions with classic ’90s properties such as Care Bears and Barney, imagining how Buddy might insert himself into those conversations. “We initially responded to every comment to boost engagement, and soon viewers were posting simply to get a reply from Buddy,” she said.
