Chennai Super Kings (CSK) may be weighing a significant roster overhaul ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auction. Former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth has proposed that the five‑time champions consider acquiring Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya in a potential trade that would involve parting with Shivam Dube.
Both CSK and MI are seeking to bounce back after underwhelming performances in IPL 2026, and speculation about player movements is intensifying as the mini‑auction looms. Srikkanth believes Pandya’s dual‑skill set as a middle‑order batsman and fast‑bowling all‑rounder would fill a critical gap for Chennai.
Kris Srikkanth Urges CSK to Swap Shivam Dube for Hardik Pandya
The former India captain and selector highlighted Pandya’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball, calling him an ideal fit for CSK’s all‑rounder slot. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said:
“It’ll be good for both Hardik and MI. Under him, they struggled with team formation and performance. Hardik Pandya will be a great inclusion for CSK because the all‑rounder slot will be sealed,” he remarked.
Srikkanth went further, suggesting that CSK should be willing to release Dube if it means securing Pandya. “Shivam Dube, I would even give for free if I were CSK. I don’t even need a trade to give Dube up. If I were CSK, I would definitely put him back in the auction and get him again if needed,” he added.
Why Hardik Pandya Could Strengthen CSK
Pandya brings a blend of middle‑order batting, fast bowling and leadership experience that few Indian all‑rounders can match. His capacity to accelerate the run rate and provide frontline pace bowling gives Chennai greater flexibility in selecting their playing XI.
The all‑rounder has a proven track record across multiple franchises. He was instrumental in Mumbai Indians’ title triumphs and later led Gujarat Titans to the IPL championship in 2022, repeating the final appearance in 2023. Pandya rejoined MI ahead of the 2024 campaign and assumed captaincy from Rohit Sharma, though Mumbai’s inconsistent results have sparked debate about the team’s future direction.
For CSK, acquiring Pandya would deliver a seasoned Indian pace‑bowling all‑rounder and an additional leader. His arrival could bolster the middle order while giving the captain more bowling options.
Shivam Dube’s Role with Chennai Super Kings
Dube has established himself as a key middle‑order batter for CSK. The left‑handed hitter excels against spin and consistently clears the boundary, providing valuable power in the middle overs.
His ability to counter spin bowling has helped the Super Kings maintain momentum when opponents try to curb scoring. Dube also offers a left‑handed presence that balances the side’s batting arsenal.
Despite these strengths, Srikkanth argues that CSK should prioritize Pandya’s acquisition due to the broader skill set he would add.
Feasibility of a Trade Between CSK and MI
Convincing Mumbai Indians to part with their captain would be a major hurdle, especially given Pandya’s experience at international level. MI would need to weigh the loss of an established leader and all‑rounder against the gain of Dube, whose middle‑order firepower and spin‑friendly batting could address their own needs.
Any exchange would require agreement from both franchises and compliance with IPL regulations. For now, Srikkanth’s proposal remains speculative, serving as a talking point ahead of IPL 2027.
