MADRID — A bus crash in the outskirts of Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday resulted in over 80 injuries, local emergency services confirmed.
According to Catalonia’s medical emergency services, 83 individuals were injured in the incident near the town of Fogars de Monclús. Of those, seven sustained serious injuries, 18 suffered minor injuries, and 58 incurred non-life-threatening injuries. The crash occurred on a narrow, winding road where the bus veered off and tumbled down a 20-meter (65-foot) embankment, as reported by Spanish news agency EFE. The precise sequence of events remains under investigation, authorities said.
Emergency response teams deployed 23 ambulances, two medical helicopters, three joint firefighter-medical units, and three psychological support teams to the scene. Additionally, specialist mountain rescue crews were dispatched by the fire service to assist in locating any potential additional victims, said EFE. Olga Pane, Catalonia’s health minister, emphasized ongoing search efforts to ensure no further casualties remained unaccounted for.
The incident underscores the hazards of rural Spanish roads, particularly those with sharp curves and steep drop-offs. Investigators are working to determine factors such as speed, road conditions, and potential mechanical failures contributing to the crash.
