Nearly 6 million Bodum French press coffee makers are being recalled due to a risk of burn injuries caused by the glass carafe potentially breaking during use, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The recall affects 5.9 million Bodum French press coffee makers equipped with 8-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes. The carafe may unexpectedly break if the glass becomes damaged or cracked, particularly when stirred with a metal spoon, as noted in the CPSC notice.
The CPSC indicated that the Bodum name is visible on the frame and inner lid of most models and is engraved directly onto the glass carafes.

Bodum USA, which announced the recall on Oct. 29, has received 70 reports of carafes breaking during use, with 48 of those incidents involving burn injuries to consumers.
“While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers,” Bodum stated.

The CPSC advises consumers to immediately stop using metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe and to contact Bodum for a free plastic stirring spoon and updated warning label.
