Bruno Fernandes has spoken out against numerous false reports concerning his relationship with Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick over the past few weeks.
Following United’s 3–2 victory over Roma on Tuesday, the 32‑year‑old midfielder became the first United player to speak to the media since being benched after criticising Michael Carrick’s tactics following a 4–1 defeat at Como.
After being reinstated to the starting lineup following the Premier League loss to Chelsea, captain Fernandes netted a 58th‑minute penalty against Roma, igniting an unlikely second‑half revival that overturned a 2–0 deficit.
“It has been a challenging period with a great deal of speculation in the media,” Fernandes told Amazon Prime.
“There have been numerous falsehoods circulating about many incidents between me and the manager. We have cleared the air, and the manager subsequently decided to bench me because I am not performing. That is fair.”
“Many assumed the bench was a punishment for my comments. If that were the case, it would be justified. The manager holds the authority to make such decisions.”
“My confidence in the manager, the staff, and every teammate remains unchanged, as does my determination to win every upcoming match.”
The triumph over Roma concluded a nine‑game winless streak, providing some relief for Carrick after a difficult stretch.
When questioned whether the victory would secure his position, Fernandes replied to Amazon Prime, “We do not need to save anyone’s job.”
He continued, “The club required that win, the players required it, and we have been striving together to turn this situation around.”
Former Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel praised Fernandes’ remarks on BBC Radio 5 Live, expressing hope that the pair could put the public disputes behind them and focus on winning matches again. “In Bruno Fernandes’ defence is that I’ve been in football a long time and what’s reported in the media is a fraction of the truth usually,” Schmeichel said. “The amount of times I saw something written about the clubs I was playing in that couldn’t be further from the truth was absolutely staggering. I hope for Manchester United and Michael Carrick they can draw a line under all this public stuff and they can get back to winning games like they did today.”
