The UK Culture Secretary has escalated her review of the £1.6 billion (≈ $2.1 billion) Sky‑ITV acquisition, requesting that competition regulators Ofcom and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) conduct a formal review.
Lisa Nandy indicated her intent to intervene last month and has now instructed Ofcom and the CMA to submit their findings by 27 January; after reviewing their reports, she will determine whether to refer the matter for a deeper CMA investigation.
Her intervention focuses on concerns about preserving free expression in news media, ensuring a diverse plurality of viewpoints across each market, and guaranteeing nationwide access to a broad spectrum of broadcast and on‑demand programming.
She announced that she will table legislation to amend the regulatory framework to encompass streaming services, a step she had previously indicated was being considered.
