Grimes is set to make her film debut as futuristic aristocrat Zayinth Alda in the AI‑generated film Gods Don’t Give Gifts.
The sci‑fi anthology Gods Don’t Give Gifts consists of four short films produced by AI studio Fable and YouTuber Gossip Goblin (Zack London). Marketed as the first fully AI‑generated feature to receive a theatrical release, it premieres in cinemas on December 4.
On November 5, it was announced that Grimes has contributed both her likeness and voice to the project. “With Gods Don’t Give Gifts, we’re hoping to reset expectations of what an animated film can look like,” said producer Edward Saatchi in a statement to People.
The team aims to establish a new visual aesthetic for animation. “Having Grimes in the film gives a preview of something completely new—performers providing vocal performances for characters that look unlike the typical Pixar/DreamWorks style,” the statement continued.
The press release explains that Gods Don’t Give Gifts examines the unsettling fallout of humanity’s pursuit to surpass physical limits. Grimes portrays a disenfranchised aristocrat in the imagined realm of Niiro Cradle, a world “where bodies are disposable and consciousness has been commoditised.”
She previously launched AI music software that mimics her voice and offers over 200 AI‑generated tracks for free use by content creators.
She later commented, “When I see the new AI tools that are about to explode, when everyone has the same tools to make professional‑quality content, you get to see the actual talent really rise to the top. If there’s ever a moment to have a feeling of purpose, I think it would be now, because what we do in the things we create over the next few decades will probably shape all minds going forward for the rest of time.”
An AI‑themed album titled Psy Opera is scheduled for release on January 22, 2027. Grimes has assured fans that the project was not created using generative AI, though it will explore the technology’s impact.
In a recent interview she reflected, “While many speak of ‘building gods,’ I ask why we assume we are inferior. We are the ones creating AI; we should not abdicate our self‑esteem, pride, responsibility, and agency by pretending the technology exists independently of us.”
She added, “Given humanity’s fragility and the vast timescales involved, extinction is a real possibility. Yet, if we foster a constructive relationship with AI, I hope they might preserve our DNA and recreate us when conditions become more hospitable.”
