Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was stopped by police after being spotted carrying a bow and arrows at a scenic spot in Northumberland.
The Bosnia-Herzegovina international, aged 24, was accompanied by a friend when officers intercepted their vehicle following a call from a concerned member of the public.
Reports indicate that six police cars, including armed officers, were dispatched to the scene. Dedic and his companion were stopped approximately seven miles from where they were originally sighted.
Police searched the car and seized the bow and arrows, but were satisfied that the two men posed no threat to public safety.
BBC Sport has been informed that Dedic had no ill intent and fully cooperated with officers.
It is reported that Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, 34, and former defender Paul Dummett, 35, arrived at the location while police were speaking with Dedic.
The pair happened to be in the area and stopped to offer their assistance.
The incident took place on Wednesday, two days after Dedic—who joined from Benfica in August for a fee in the region of £30 million—played in Newcastle’s 1-0 home defeat by Everton.
Newcastle, currently 13th in the Premier League with 11 points from nine games, has not commented on the situation.
Northumbria Police has issued a statement confirming that enquiries are ongoing, though the force has not named Dedic.
The force said it received reports of two men carrying a bow and arrows while walking along a track beside a reservoir on Military Road in the Harlow Hill area.
“Officers attended and subsequently stopped a vehicle in the Darras Hall area and seized a bow and arrows,” the statement added.
“At this stage, it is understood they were for recreational use and there was no threat to the public.”
Newcastle faces Fulham on Saturday at 15:00 GMT before the November international break.
Dedic, who has made 10 league and cup appearances since joining Newcastle, has been named in the Bosnia-Herzegovina squad for Nations League matches away to Sweden on 14 November and at home to Romania on 17 November.
