Following FIFA’s new adjustments, Curacao secured a historic spot at the 2026 World Cup, marking their first participation in the tournament. While not a powerhouse, their inclusion has sparked significant fan interest. Notably, they represent the smallest country ever to qualify.
With 171 square miles (444 km²) and a population of 158,000, Curacao holds the record as the smallest nation in World Cup history. This surpasses Iceland’s 2018 record, as their size rivals New Orleans at 440 km².
Though geographically near Venezuela, Curacao competes under CONCACAF, where they advanced by surpassing Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Bermuda in Group B qualifiers. Without elite players, they may face defensive challenges, as seen in recent losses to Scotland, Australia, and China.

Curacao eye historic breakthrough at the 2026 World Cup
Facing Germany and Ecuador in Group E, Curacao’s path to top two spots is difficult. However, the reinstated best third-placed teams system offers a path to the knockout stages. As debutants, they aim to make a landmark impact.
