Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said a fervent halftime talk sparked the Pharaohs’ 3-1 comeback win over New Zealand, keeping their FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout‑stage hopes alive.
After trailing at halftime, Egypt rallied in the second half to overturn the result and secure three crucial points in Group G.
Following the match, Hassan revealed the exact words he shared with his squad during the break.
“At halftime I told the players we were not going back onto the field only to return to the locker room as losers; we had to finish as winners,” said the Egypt head coach.
“We could not let down our supporters or betray the trust and joy of the Egyptian people after everything we have built over the past two years,” he added.
Hassan noted that the players were continually reminded of the responsibility they bear for millions of Egyptians watching worldwide.
“I kept telling the players throughout the second half that the Egyptian people deserve to be happy,” he said. “They were in the stadium, watching from Egypt and across the globe — young and old, men and women — all of whom deserve joy and success. I have deep affection for the Egyptian fans and thank them for their unwavering support.”
The former Pharaohs captain praised his players’ reaction, which erased the deficit with three second‑half goals.
“I am pleased with how the team responded and turned the match around positively; regardless of the circumstances, we keep fighting until the final whistle,” he said.
Hassan also complimented New Zealand, calling the Oceania side a tough opponent.
“It was not a simple contest. New Zealand possess a strong squad with quality players, physical strength and an excellent coach. Nevertheless, our players responded well on the pitch; we stuck to our game plan and executed our duties,” he remarked.
Having earned four points from their first two games, Egypt now approaches their final group encounter against Iran with confidence, as a historic knockout‑stage berth lies within reach.
