The Cannes Lions festival highlighted an exceptional celebration of diversity and inclusion.
While Cannes Lions does not yet present a formal award for such initiatives, the 2026 edition could recognize Canva for hosting a Pride celebration that coincided with a week of high‑profile panels featuring Oprah Winfrey, Colin Jost and Carmelo Anthony.
‘In an era where many brands step back from DE&I commitments, having an organization that embraces them unapologetically is invaluable,’ said Jimmy Knowles, Canva’s global head of experiential.
The Canva Creative Cabana Pride on the Croisette beach opened with a vibrant parade of European drag performers lip‑syncing hits by Katy Perry and Rihanna. Attendees sampled ice cream, frozen Smirnoff cocktails and custom face‑paint designs, creating a festive atmosphere.
The evening concluded with a surprise appearance by the Teletubbies, the beloved 1990s characters, who took the stage to celebrate love and inclusivity. Tinky Winky, the purple Teletubby who faced controversy in 1999 over alleged sexual orientation, led the troupe alongside Dipsy, Laa‑Laa and Po. The crowd cheered as the characters leapt from the stage to mingle with fans, dancing to Britney Spears’ “Toxic.”
The Teletubbies appeared at Cannes Lions to mark the upcoming 30th anniversary of the franchise in partnership with WildBrain Media Solutions, a global leader in children’s advertising.
When approached for comment, a WildBrain Media Solutions spokesperson indicated that the Teletubbies do not speak publicly, but team members would be present to facilitate translation. As the group departed amid a swarm of fans seeking photographs, a representative could not be reached immediately.
Emma Witkowski, WildBrain’s vice president of Media Solutions, was interviewed on site. ‘The Teletubbies embody joy and inclusivity,’ she said, her cheeks glittering as attendees danced with rainbow‑colored fans. ‘It was the perfect collaboration.’
Variety and Canva co‑hosted the Creative Cabana at Cannes Lions, where leading C‑suite executives participated in interview sessions.
