A secular community space has opened in Thailand, offering a non-religious hub for visiting Israelis and promoting Jewish secular traditions in response to global religious outreach efforts.
The center operates near the well-known Chabad House on Ko Pha Ngan island, specifically designed to counter what organizers describe as aggressive religious outreach. Its establishment follows reports of Chabad Houses using cultural activities like music and inexpensive meals to promote Orthodox Jewish beliefs among secular Israeli travelers.
Leaders of the Free Secular Movement, which spearheaded the project, allege that Chabad Houses worldwide aim to transform Israel into a “state governed by Jewish religious law,” using localized infrastructure to influence young secular populations. They characterize Chabad’s approach as promoting messianic ideology under the guise of hospitality.
Naor Narkis, a secular Zionist activist and politician, stated that the new facility intends to counteract this dynamic. “Through friendly interactions with bowls of lentils, they plant seeds for religious conversion. Our goal is to plant a secular counterroot – philosophically and culturally anchored, yet open to global exchange,” he said.
The Secular House’s programming includes academic discussions of thinkers like Baruch Spinoza and Shulamit Aloni, weekly meetings celebrating non-religious Jewish identity through shared meals, yoga classes blending spiritual and secular practices, and workshops on preparing regional seafood dishes alongside traditional Israeli cuisine. It also provides amenities such as coworking spaces for digital nomads and hosts community-building events blending Israeli and Thai cultural elements.
Narkis highlighted concerns about religious influence in public policy: “When religious ideologies enter government institutions, they often begin with seemingly innocuous outreach. The presence of secular alternatives in global locations like Thailand sends a clear message – diverse Jewish identities can coexist without religious coercion.”
