The trailer for the upcoming war film “Peluru Senja: The Ghost & the Gun” has premiered, revealing its scheduled Malaysian theatrical debut on August 28, aligned with the nation’s Independence Day weekend.
Local distributor MSK Cinemas will manage the film’s nationwide rollout.
This Bahasa Malaysia-language film marks the third project by Singaporean-Indian director Anshul Tiwari, following “Before Life After Death” and “Bayaar.” Co-written by Abhi Kumar, the production is helmed by Debasmita Dasgupta, Tim Willrich, Bo H. Holmgreen, and Mikail Chowdhury, with Jessie White of Misfit Studios and Mohsen Ashraf of Friendly Felix Studios serving as executive producers. Additional producers include Tanveer Ali, Amreen Bashir of Amra Bangladeshi, and Tahmid Khan of Auras.
Set in 1948 Malaya during the post-World War II period, the narrative centers on a Malay and a British soldier stranded after the military withdrawal. The pair navigates their wartime past while safeguarding a village threatened by rebel forces.
Award-winning Malaysian actor Fabian Loo, known for “Rain Town” and “One Cent Thief,” stars with Hazman Al-Idrus. The ensemble also features Indonesian actor Asmara Abigail (“Stone Turtle,” “Impetigore”) and U.S. actor Brett Tutor (“Monsters of Man”).
Tiwari explained, “While many World War II films exist, few originate from this region or address the consequences of British withdrawal and subsequent chaos. Abhi Kumar’s script provided a fitting platform to explore the psychological scars borne by war survivors.”
Production involved collaborators from six countries. Dasgupta, whose company FilmsPositive spearheaded the project, noted, “We united talents and crew from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, India, Bangladesh, and the U.K. to realize this vision.”
The film distinguishes itself as one of the first war movies shot entirely in Bali. Holmgreen stated, “Filming in Bali enabled us to construct a visually striking environment using natural landscapes and 14 meticulously crafted 1940s Malaysian sets.”
Sivalingam of MSK Cinemas highlighted the film’s appeal: “Its powerful storytelling, authentic Malaysian backdrop, and emotional depth, paired with exceptional production quality, demands a cinematic experience.” She added, “We’re committed to ensuring a robust theatrical release.”
White emphasized, “The film tells a deeply human story set against a pivotal moment in Malaysian history, and we’re eager to share it on the big screen.”
The project leveraged Malaysia’s post-production infrastructure and incorporated creative voices from South and Southeast Asia.
“Peluru Senja: The Ghost & the Gun” will open in Malaysian cinemas nationwide on August 28.
