“The maxim ‘form follows function,’ often overused in architecture, perfectly captures Max Mara’s design ethos. This season, the brand showcased its Atelier collection during couture week at its Paris flagship, where a striking orange helical staircase by Sophie Hicks spiraled through the venue like a DNA strand, underscoring the deep connection between architecture and the brand’s identity.”
While the main line refines everyday outerwear, the Atelier line pushes the concept to haute‑couture levels — what the house calls “industrial couture.” Here, meticulous construction, rigorous fabric research, and precise pattern engineering transform even the most accessible garments into true design objects.
This season, the Atelier team drew inspiration from the rationalist architecture of Max Mara’s original Bauhaus‑inspired factory in Reggio Emilia. Coatmaking was approached with architectural precision: each seam served a purpose, each volume was carefully resolved, and every fabric selection was structural, not merely ornamental. Sir coats, sculptural capes, redingotes, and kimono‑style wraps juxtaposed generous volumes with sleek silhouettes, while cashmere, tweed, radzimir, and faille added tactile warmth to the architectural rigor. The colour palette referenced the built environment, pairing asphalt, cement and charcoal with brick, burgundy, Klein blue and touches of gold.
The collection honored a lineage of pioneering women architects — including Gae Aulenti, Eileen Gray, Cini Boeri, Florence Knoll, and Sophie Hicks — demonstrating that restraint need not be austere. Their dedication to purposeful design endures in the Atelier ethos: just as a building’s primary duty is shelter, a great coat must similarly fulfill that fundamental role.
