US leaders to issue new warning to Iran
The White House announced new measures against Iran, including a blockade of maritime routes and a tax on cargo. Iranian leaders condemned Washington’s actions as “piracy.”
President Trump stated that US action aimed to mitigate the threat posed by Iran’s alleged activities in the Gulf, while Tehran accused Washington of undermining efforts to establish peace.
According to reports, two vessels were struck by missiles, and one crew member was killed. Tensions have been rising in the region, with Iran conducting military operations and the US responding with retaliatory measures.
UK maritime security agency UKMTO reported another incident involving a tanker being struck by a missile while passing through the strait. The incident occurred near the coast of Oman.
Military operations have led to casualties, with reports indicating a minimum of 28 individuals have died as a result of the renewed conflict. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have carried out attacks on targets in other countries, including Bahrain and Jordan.
Iran accused Bahrain of hosting US forces and claimed to have targeted related facilities. Bahrain confirmed intercepting missile and drone attacks, attributing them to Iran, while expressing concern over civilian casualties.
In response to the renewed hostilities, Trump issued a statement declaring that the United States would assume control over the strait. He announced a 20% tax on all cargo passing through the area, which drew criticism from Iran, labelling the measures as an act of “economic piracy.”
Reports indicate that the blockade will take effect at 2000 GMT on Tuesday, affecting Iran’s coastal cities and ports. The measures come amid rising oil prices, which surged more than nine percent following the announcement of renewed conflict.
Iranian officials have expressed their readiness to engage in diplomatic efforts, but emphasized that continued US actions will hinder the progress of negotiations. Tehran has also indicated that any further steps by Washington will be met with retaliatory measures.
Trump reiterated his commitment to resolving the conflict, stating that a deal with Iran remains possible despite the current escalation. However, Iran’s Foreign Minister has criticized the US for violating the terms of previous agreements, stating that Tehran would disregard its obligations if the US did not adhere to them.
Despite the ongoing tensions, mediators from Qatar, Pakistan, and Oman are working to facilitate dialogue between the two nations. Experts suggest that the escalating attacks may delay a permanent resolution to the conflict, as both sides seek to achieve their goals through military means rather than diplomacy.
