Aaron Rai received an unexpected handwritten letter after claiming his first major championship. Though it wasn’t a bill, brochure, or promotional material, the personal note left a profound impression.
Sent by Jack Nicklaus, a legend with 18 major titles, the gesture left Rai in awe. “It was surreal,” he admitted during his Open Championship press conference. “For someone like that to take the time to write to me… it shows the class of what Jack is about.”
The exchange began earlier at the Genesis Scottish Open, where Rai learned that fellow professional Pablo Larrazabal had been struggling. Moved by their conversation, Rai left a handwritten encouragement in Larrazabal’s locker, complete with photos of past victories. His message read: “The guy in these pictures is who you are… Keep fighting, keep working hard, and most importantly, keep believing.”
Larrazabal later described the act as overwhelming. “It’s not all about winning,” he said. “Aaron will be leaving a legacy around the world, not only because of his game, but because of how he behaves on and off the course.”
When asked about balancing kindness with competitive drive—particularly after his PGA Championship win—Rai emphasized the distinction. “Those two aspects are different,” he said. “I think being true to the game, the process, and the challenge brings out a different side of competitiveness. It’s about being authentic to your journey and the sport itself.”
