WWE SmackDown aired live from Albany, New York, ahead of the Saturday Night Main Event, where Cody Rhodes and CM Punk faced Sami Zayn and Gunther. If Gunther and Zayn emerged victorious, they would be added to the SummerSlam main event between Rhodes and Punk.

Acting SmackDown General Manager Adam Pearce announced Rhea Ripley’s current injury and revealed plans to crown an interim WWE Women’s Champion. Jade Cargill and Tiffany Stratton advanced to the qualifiers for the women’s Ladder Match at SummerSlam, joining Nia Jax in the competition;

Adam Pearce Announces Major Stipulation for SNME Main Event

• Gunther called out Nick Aldis for their match stipulation, stating Aldis only added him to protect himself. Aldis referred to Sami Zayn as a “bum,” leading to Adam Pearce’s intervention. Pearce stated Gunther should thank Aldis for saving his career.
• Pearce confirmed that if Sami Zayn and Gunther win the SNME match, they will join Cody Rhodes and CM Punk in the SummerSlam main event
• Gunther and Cody Rhodes exchange heated words after Gunther’s victory over Rhodes. Rhodes calls out Gunther’s logic for being rewarded despite attacking him, referencing WWE’s booking decisions.
• Pearce officially makes the main event match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther official after Rhodes’ challenge.

Adam Pearce Announces Interim WWE Women’s Championship

• Adam Pearce announces that five women will compete in qualifying matches for the Ladder Match at SummerSlam. The winner will become the interim WWE Women’s Champion. Qualifying matches include: Jade Cargill vs. Nia Jax and Tiffany Stratton vs. Jacy Jayne.

Finn Balor def. Talla Tonga

• Talla Tonga started with dominance, but Finn Balor countered with a clever move straddling Tonga on the top rope, remarking, “we’ve got fried onions in Albany.”
• Tama Tonga interfered, but Balor countered with a slingblade to the outside. Balor secured two Coup de Graces for the win.
• Balor’s impressive performance has him positioned for a World Title opportunity, closing

Tiffany Stratton Def. Jacy Jayne

• Before the match, Fatal Influence attacked Tiffany Stratton, but Brie Bella entered to make the save.
• This match was interruptions, with most of the match time cut short for advertisements. Tiffany Stratton countered a Rolling Encore from Jacy Jayne with a rolling senton, then won with a PME.
• Backstage, Trick Williams confronted Baron Corbin, claiming his world title had more hair than Baron’s. Carmelo Hayes
• Carmelo Hayes dove into the area, advising Trick to focus on their upcoming match.

Match Grade: C

Jade Cargill Def. Nia Jax by Disqualification

• The match began with Charlotte Flair entering, taking out B-Fab, and attacking Michin and Cargill until Jax forced the disqualification. Nia Jax expressed frustration after the squash.
• After Charlotte was squashed, Jade Cargill hit Jaded on Flair. Backstage, Johnny Gargano interrupts Blake Monroe, who was planking, and instead, Monroe attacks Candice LeRae.
• After the attack, Monroe stares angrily at Gargano, saying, “you need a haircut.”
