ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Los Angeles Angels face a pivotal moment in their season as the trade deadline approaches. With the team sitting at the bottom of the American League West and out of Wild Card contention, the organization must decide whether to sell off assets before the deadline.
The Angels have historically been hesitant to trade key players, even during tough seasons. However, the current situation—combined with new leadership through the end of the season—may force a different approach. Starting pitcher Reid Detmers, who has shown flashes of potential, could become a prime trade candidate.
Detmers Shines Despite Team Challenges
“I try not to think about it,” Detmers said regarding trade speculation. “It’s obviously hard to ignore, but I can only control what I do here. My focus is helping this team win and making the postseason.”
On Friday against the Detroit Tigers, Detmers delivered six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven. His signature slider was effective, complemented by improved fastball command that kept hitters off balance.
Despite his strong outing, manager Kurt Suzuki opted to pull Detmers after 86 pitches, citing the need to manage his workload post-All-Star break. “He threw well coming off the break, and we wanted to build on that momentum,” Suzuki said.
Ailing Offense and Late-Game Collapse
The Angels managed only one run—a first-inning RBI groundout by Josh Lowe—holding a 1-0 lead until the ninth. Closer Kirby Yates entered to protect the lead but walked a batter and hit another before Hao-Yu Lee crushed a go-ahead three-run homer to right-center field, sealing a 2-1 Tigers win.
“I couldn’t get the leadoff guy out, and that hurt,” Yates said. “I needed to make key pitches late but couldn’t execute when it mattered.”
The loss marked the Angels’ 60th of the season, further underscoring their need for major roster changes. Detmers’ performance solidified his status as a potential trade asset, offering hope for the team’s rebuilding efforts.
