Venice immerses in 2026 program unveiling

The Venice Film Festival is poised to unveil its 2026 program, featuring an international slate of compelling titles.

Mirroring Cannes, the festival anticipates a reduced Hollywood presence, yet it still boasts a robust roster of award‑contending films.

Opening the festival will be Danny Boyle’s world premiere, “Ink.” The biographical drama, set in the 1960s and starring Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch and Jack O’Connell as Tom Lamb, the editor of the Sun, will vie for the Golden Lion. Netflix has secured U.S. distribution rights.

In the out‑of‑competition section, Giovanni Veronesi’s “Dio Ride,” translating as “God Laughs,” will close the festival. Starring Pierfrancesco Favino as a 17th‑century Tuscan friar who redefines his relationship with God, the film sparks tension within the Church.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, director of “The Bride” and “The Lost Daughter,” will chair the competition jury — the third woman in five years after Isabelle Huppert, Julianne Moore, and Cate Blanchett. Her colleagues include Johnnie To, Kaouther Ben Hania, Shahrbanoo Sadat, Xavier Giannoli, composer Daniel Blumberg, and Italian‑American film scholar Francesco Casetti.

George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn will receive lifetime achievement honors.

The 83rd Venice Film Festival will run from September 2 to 12.
