KARACHI – The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) warned on Sunday that certain areas of the city could experience water supply interruptions following a power outage at the Dhabeji pumping station.
The Dhabeji Pumping Station, the city’s primary water intake facility, relies on continuous electricity; even short outages trigger immediate service disruptions.
A KWSC spokesperson reported that the outage began at 8:45 a.m. during the station’s third phase, leaving the phase’s power supply suspended.
‘K-Electric has identified a cable fault at the station, and a technical team has been dispatched to resolve it,’ the spokesperson said to Dawn.
He added that three pumps at the Dhabeji facility had been temporarily shut down as a result of the fault, potentially affecting water transmission across several parts of the metropolis.
The corporation estimates a temporary shortfall of 75 million gallons per day in the city’s water supply caused by the cable fault, he noted.
Areas likely to be affected include parts of North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, and Scheme 33, the spokesperson elaborated.
He stated that KWSC is maintaining constant contact with KE to expedite fault rectification and restore full electricity.
‘All pumps will be activated immediately upon full power restoration to bring water supply back to normal,’ the spokesperson added.
On Thursday, the Sindh cabinet approved a 40 % increase in funding for a dedicated water pipeline, to be constructed by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), that will supply water to the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) from Dumlotee on Karachi’s outskirts.
Earlier this month, an electricity outage at the K‑2 Pumping Station caused three major pumps to shut down.
