Brooklyn Street Renamed in Tribute to ODB

A street in Brooklyn has been officially renamed in tribute to Wu‑Tang Clan founder Ol’ Dirty Bastard. At a ceremony on July 26, attended by his friends, family, and city officials, Putnam Avenue in the Bed‑Stuy neighborhood was designated ODB Jones Way.

Although Ol’ Dirty Bastard, born Russell Tyrone Jones, grew up in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood, his ties to Bed‑Stuy run deep. During the ceremony, his eldest brother Ramsay Jones told photographer Howie Weiss that the street sign was placed at the corner of a block where their grandmother still lives. That same block also features a prominent mural of the cover of Jones’ debut solo album, Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version.

The renaming occurred more than two decades after Jones died from an overdose in 2004 at age 35. Since then, two documentaries about his life and legacy have been released: an unauthorized 2013 film that his estate attempted to block, and a 2023 A&E documentary released with his family’s blessing.
