Though often criticized for relying on the now antiquated, albeit still occasionally charming, open-world formula popularized by Ubisoft, Far Cry 3 remains one of the finest entries in the franchise. Its captivating villains, exceptional gunplay, and stunning tropical island setting are hallmarks that influenced the rest of the series while rarely being matched. Since its initial release in 2012, Ubisoft has revisited the project multiple times, yet has primarily left the base game untouched.
Beyond the recent next-gen update, Ubisoft’s hands-off approach meant the game long awaited many essential improvements. Now, a brand-new initiative is in development to not only significantly enhance the overall experience but also reintroduce content that was cut before launch. Titled Far Cry 3: Project Medusa, this enhancement for the original title could make it well worth revisiting once again.
Far Cry 3: Project Medusa is an upcoming mod developed by modders Scar and MysteryGamerPL that aims to restore the game to its alpha and beta states. It achieves this by reintroducing previously cut content, tweaking the visuals to resemble the original trailers and gameplay footage, and altering character models and environmental details to create a similar effect. Ostensibly, Project Medusa aims to make Far Cry 3 look exactly as it did when Ubisoft first revealed it.
This project goes far beyond simply applying HD textures or modernizing outdated mechanics to appeal to a contemporary audience. Far Cry 3: Project Medusa serves as a form of preservation, representing a novel approach to modding that appears to be a passion project for its creators. It takes what is widely regarded as one of Ubisoft’s greatest games of all time and reverts it to its former state—the exact vision Ubisoft showcased but ultimately failed to deliver.
Previously, Scar crafted a Dying Light mod that sought to achieve a similar effect by restoring the game to its E3 visual style. The variations in environmental detail, lighting, and color, while not drastic, are unmistakable and impart a completely unique ambience that is far closer to the original E3 reveal than what we ended up getting. As Ubisoft frequently alters a game’s overall aesthetic by launch, it is entirely understandable why this modding duo wants to restore Far Cry 3 to its roots.
While Far Cry 3: Project Medusa may not be as thrilling as a wholly new Far Cry game, it should strongly appeal to those who wish to revisit the Rook Islands in an entirely new light—quite literally. The mod currently lacks a release date, though its developers have already released a trailer on their YouTube channel. At the very least, it provides an option that stays truer to Ubisoft’s original vision for Far Cry 3, a creative direction that was tragically lost between the game’s initial alpha reveal and the final product released in 2012.
