Ted Lasso Season 4 Sets Apple TV Viewership Record

It may seem surprising that a series with a seemingly conclusive finale would return for a fourth season, especially after a major cast overhaul. The answer lies in its unprecedented viewership.

Season 4 of Ted Lasso accumulated 296.6 million viewing minutes within the first two days of August 4‑5. In Nielsen terms, this makes it the largest Apple TV premiere ever, surpassing the debuts of all previous Ted Lasso seasons as well as hits like Severance and Pluribus and virtually every other acclaimed series the platform has launched.

Originally debuting on Apple TV in 2020, Ted Lasso quickly became a cultural phenomenon, driven by Jason Sudeikis’s optimistic coach. While season 2 was strong and season 3 experienced a modest dip, season 4 has rebounded, drawing viewers eager to see Lasso’s new chapter: coaching a women’s team for the first time.

The new premise sees the departure of most of the original men’s team, with only Brett Goldstein remaining, while a fresh ensemble of women joins the cast. The core characters—Ted, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple), Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) and Leslie (Jeremy Swift)—remain, ensuring continuity. Despite the cast changes, the show’s continuation is justified by its strong audience interest and engagement.

Apple TV has not yet confirmed a fifth season, but given the impressive metrics, a renewal appears likely absent any major creative disputes. Apple TV executive Eddy Cue remarked to Screenrant: “I hope so. It’s certainly good enough for that. So I think there’s plenty of stories to go on. We’ll show up. No worries.”

Reportedly, the principal cast has signed a new three‑year agreement that could fund up to three additional seasons. Season 4 currently comprises ten episodes, with two having aired and the series concluding on October 7, 2026. This shorter schedule follows a 3.5‑year hiatus between seasons 3 and 4, a period during which the show’s future was uncertain. Upcoming seasons are expected to have reduced gaps, and a green light for season 5 appears all but inevitable.
