Britain’s BBC has petitioned a U.S. federal court in Florida for assistance in obtaining documents and testimony from members of US President Donald Trump’s family in connection with his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the broadcaster, according to court documents filed on Friday.
The BBC’s legal team argues that Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr. possess “personal knowledge” and are likely to have records relevant to key elements of Trump’s claims against the network. The broadcaster has been unable to serve subpoenas due to the trio’s Secret Service protection and accompanying security personnel, as outlined in the filing.
Trump initiated the lawsuit in December, seeking $10 billion in damages from the BBC, accusing the broadcaster of defamation and deceptive business practices. The allegations center on the editing of Donald Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech, which the lawsuit claims was manipulated through “splicing together two entirely separate parts” to misrepresent the former president’s statements. The suit further contends that the edited content constituted an intentional effort to sway the 2024 presidential election.
In response, the BBC has issued an apology for the misleading edit but maintains that it did not defame Trump, emphasizing that its reporting was lawful and in the public interest.
