HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The U.S. Space Force has selected five commercial entities to participate in its Space Data Network (SDN) initiative, aiming to demonstrate seamless connectivity between government and private satellite systems.
The initiative, administered by Space Systems Command (SSC), involves fixed-price contracts and Other Transaction Authority (OTA) agreements totaling $12 million per company. The five awardees—Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab, and York Space Systems—will focus on validating integration methodologies and testing end-to-end connectivity across diverse commercial satellite constellations.
Four of the companies—Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab, and York Space Systems—are already under contract to develop the Space Development Agency’s low Earth orbit Transport Layer. Amazon LEO for Government will support interoperability efforts alongside this group.
“This initiative ensures that commercial satellite systems can securely and efficiently exchange data with the SDN backbone,” stated SSC leadership. “By establishing standardized physical, electrical, and data interface protocols, the Space Force is creating a plug-and-play architecture that reduces integration costs and accelerates deployment of emerging technologies.”
The five-month contract phase emphasizes ground-to-space and space-to-space data transport between SDN and commercial payloads. A subsequent OTA phase will allocate $2 million per company to develop Space Exchange Point (SEP) satellites, designed to act as orbital routers connecting disparate networks to the SDN.
SSC highlighted that these efforts support the Pentagon’s Golden Dome missile defense initiative and represent a strategic step toward scalable, secure interoperability. By establishing common standards early, the agency aims to foster a competitive ecosystem where proven commercial systems can rapidly integrate with government infrastructure.
Last May, SSC awarded SpaceX a $2.9 billion contract to construct the SDN backbone constellation, which will provide low-latency connectivity for military and commercial satellites in low Earth orbit. The current awards build on this foundation, focusing on real-world validation of multi-vendor payload integration.
The first phase will include six-to-nine-month performance periods at $10 million each, with follow-on OTAs targeting SEP prototype development. These investments seek to eliminate custom redesign requirements for future payloads, enabling cross-orbital coordination through unified standards.
