Saturday brought celebration for Texas quarterback Arch Manning following his team’s comeback victory over Ohio State. By Monday, however, the spotlight had shifted, prompting Manning to address comments that drew widespread criticism.
In a statement shared on social media, Manning apologized for remarks he made regarding an AI-generated video that appeared to show Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian forcefully striking ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe.
During a postgame press conference on Monday, Manning was asked if he had viewed any fan-created content from Saturday’s game. He responded by referencing several AI-edited clips circulating online, including one that depicted Sarkisian slapping Rowe. “I saw an AI edit of Sark’s interview,” Manning said. “Have y’all seen that one? That’s a good one. Of him slapping Holly Rowe? It’s hilarious.”
The comment quickly drew backlash due to the disturbing nature of the fabricated video. In his apology, Manning acknowledged the impact of his words. “In my press conference yesterday, I made an insensitive comment about an AI video,” he wrote. “There is nothing funny about it. While it’s easy to say I didn’t mean any harm, I recognize that my words were hurtful, and I do not take that lightly. I am deeply sorry.”
Manning also extended a direct apology to Rowe, who accepted his gesture. “I specifically want to apologize to Holly Rowe for what she has had to endure as a result of my comments. I have immense respect for her and am grateful for the grace she has shown during this time. I need to do better and will strive to be more thoughtful moving forward,” he added.
The original footage, which went viral earlier in the week, showed Sarkisian walking away abruptly from Rowe before she could pose a question, drawing concern and prompting further discussion around media conduct and digital misinformation.
