On Monday, President Trump welcomed a teenage lifeguard and the boy he rescued to the White House, where he reprimanded a CNN reporter and fielded questions on multiple topics.
The Oval Office gathering honored Ryder Williams, the teenage lifeguard praised for pulling 10‑year‑old Nathaniel Rai from turbulent Santa Cruz surf last month—a rescue that spread virally online. During the ceremony, with attendees watching, Trump directed criticism toward CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes.
Off‑camera, Holmes attempted to pose a question about North Korea, prompting Trump to tell her to “be quiet.”
It is typical for Trump to field broad questions from reporters while hosting guests at the White House, and he has often singled out women and journalists of color in those interactions.
Earlier, Holmes inquired about a remark by Senator Jon Ossoff (D‑GA) concerning Trump’s travel with aide Natalie Harp. Trump avoided answering in the Oval Office; subsequently, the White House labeled the question “disgusting and inhumane” on social media, claiming her children would eventually feel embarrassed.
CNN issued a statement defending Holmes, asserting that personal attacks are unbecoming of the presidency and “inconsistent with the principles of a free press.”
During the event, Trump lauded Williams’s bravery and acknowledged the lifeguards who trained him, joking that he likely would not have performed the rescue himself.
“He’s a real hero. I don’t know if I’d do it—I probably wouldn’t,” Trump said of the rescue.
“You’re lucky I wasn’t on duty that day,” he told Nathaniel.
During Holmes’s North Korea question, Trump turned to Nathaniel and said the boy recognized that Holmes was being “disrespectful.”
