Murals celebrating her life have appeared in cities nationwide, while the Empire State Building was illuminated in pink to commemorate her legacy. Supporters are mourning the loss of a transformative figure in country music who also made substantial contributions to communities through her Imagination Library literacy program and generous donations that helped fund Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine development.

Renaming Initiative Gains Momentum

Travelers heading to Nashville may soon arrive at Dolly Parton International Airport. Governor Bill Lee has endorsed growing efforts to rename the facility in honor of the late entertainer.

While the proposed change technically conflicts with existing airport policy—which typically restricts rededications to individuals with direct connections to aviation—the Metro Nashville Airport Authority Board is advancing the initiative nonetheless.

Flags Lowered in Her Honor

According to Nashville Public Radio, flags will remain at half-staff for the next week to mark Parton’s passing at age 80. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that flags would be lowered at the White House and throughout the country, describing Parton as “one of the greatest Country singers… EVER.”

Community Tributes Continue

Nashville Public Radio’s coverage has captured the grief felt throughout the city. At unofficial memorial sites across the Nashville area, mourners have left flowers, handwritten messages, and other tokens of remembrance for the beloved artist.

Unexpected Gesture to Austin Drag Performer

Parton’s generosity extended to unexpected recipients. In Texas, she sent an acoustic guitar adorned with rhinestones to Austin drag queen Brigitte Bandit, complete with her signature.

According to reporting by KUT, Bandit had endured a challenging year, including testimony at the Texas Capitol opposing legislation that would restrict certain drag performances and participation in a lawsuit challenging such bills.

Following Bandit’s Dolly Parton impersonation performance at Oilcan Harry’s that December, one of the hosts invited her onstage while a five-minute tribute video played, featuring messages from individuals expressing gratitude for Parton’s advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community.

The host then presented her with an unusually shaped box wrapped in pink.

“At first I wondered if it was a Dolly costume or something,” Bandit told KUT. “Then I opened it and saw the signature.”

Dollywood Honors Its Founder

WUOT in Knoxville reported that Dollywood opened its gates the day after Parton’s death to celebrate the icon’s enduring legacy. The park’s leadership emphasized that “the show must go on” in keeping with Parton’s spirit.

Dressed entirely in pink with platform tennis shoes, rhinestone-studded pants, and a sparkling shirt, Angie Henson explained her tribute: “She loved to outshine and outsparkle everybody. That’s why I wear what I wear a lot—I want to bring happiness to people through my sparkle.”

Musical Legacy Celebrated

Nashville Public Radio Senior Music Writer Jewly Hight curated an extensive 100-song playlist honoring Parton’s remarkable career.

“I compiled this selection to capture the full scope of her musical impact,” Hight wrote in her feature, “spanning her own iconic, enduring, and often underappreciated solo work, diverse collaborations, contributions to film, covers, samples, interpolations, and other demonstrations of her limitless influence spanning generations and genres.”

Legislative Recognition Proposed

Nashville Public Radio reported that Tennessee legislators are exploring additional ways to commemorate Parton. Following the establishment of “Dolly Parton Day” on January 19th earlier this year to mark her 80th birthday, lawmakers are now considering designating September 25th as “9 to 5 Day” in her honor.

Educational Impact Documented

Parton’s contributions transcended the entertainment industry. Since 2017, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has distributed more than 24.6 million complimentary books to young children across North Carolina through the state’s Smart Start network, with over 241,000 children currently enrolled in the program, according to WFAE.
