The three‑hour documentary focusing on disgraced tech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes opened to an impressive $15 million (≈£11.25 million) at the box office, despite being shown on just 855 screens in the United States and Canada.
The film, titled You Can See Everything, is an A24 production co‑directed by comedian Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, and had been highly anticipated.
It portrays Holmes at her home in 2023 during the month leading up to her 11‑year prison term.
Deadline called the opening “easily the second‑best ever for a documentary,” trailing only Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), which covered the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
The documentary placed second overall, behind Paramount’s new video‑game adaptation Street Fighter, which debuted to $31 million in North America and $51.1 million worldwide.
Its opening also marked the biggest debut for a film shown on fewer than 1,000 screens since Borat (2006), which earned $26 million.
Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors in her medical‑testing company Theranos, an episode that sparked widespread media coverage and has been examined in books, podcasts and the mini‑series The Dropout, starring Amanda Seyfried.
In the film, comedian Nathan Fielder—known for series such as The Rehearsal and The Curse—inserts himself into the narrative, again blurring the boundaries between documentary, social experiment and prank show.
The documentary shows the polarizing Silicon Valley founder inviting a skeptical film crew to document her daily life in the thirty‑four days preceding her incarceration.
A teaser trailer was released last month following the film’s surprise premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado.
The trailer quickly went viral, spawning numerous online memes centered on Holmes’s unflinching question to Fielder: “Why would I deceive you?”
